Here is a really well documented robot build that is based on an ATmega8 AVR chip. The web site has detailed build instructions that include everything from making the chassis to programming the AVR chip.

[Ron Tajima] fashioned a Pac-Man casemod for his Roomba using 448 LEDs and a SH2 MPU control unit. It features the correct arcade sounds and even the death animation.

This modular robot from UPenn reassembles itself when it is literally "kicked" apart by someone. It's a pretty interesting process of renewal for this little guy, check out the video for the full effect.
