Nine Inch Nails Creeps Out Music Labels With Free 'Ghosts'

In the latest sign the music distribution business continues to be roiled by change, Nine Inch Nails has released its new album in a variety of formats, including giving part of it away on file-sharing technologies such as BitTorrent. The musical act has released part of its latest recording, a two-hour collection of instrumental music known as "Ghosts I-IV," under a noncommercial Creative Commons license.

Open Source Drupal Dives Into Commercial Waters

Drupal, the wildly popular open source social publishing system which has been downloaded more than 2 million times since it was released in 2001, will soon be available as a commercial distribution. The news was announced at DrupalCon Boston 2008, a convention of Drupal users, being held in Boston March 3-6.

Intel Christens Atom Line of Mobile Processors

Intel has settled on a new brand name for its family of low-power processors, which formerly were referred to by the code names "Silverthorne" and "Diamondville." Now dubbed "Atom," the new processors will find their way into low-power mobile Internet devices and ultra low-cost computers. Intel also announced the Intel Centrino Atom processor technology brand for MID platforms.

Japan Leads Robot Revolution

At a university lab in a Tokyo suburb, engineering students are wiring a rubbery robot face to simulate six basic expressions: anger, fear, sadness, happiness, surprise and disgust. Hooked up to a database of words clustered by association, the robot -- dubbed Kansei, or "sensibility" -- responds to the word "war" by quivering in what looks like disgust and fear.

Microsoft has said it plans to cut the cost of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets. Although no exact date has yet been given, Microsoft said price cuts would be introduced in 70 countries.
