MWC: Visual Voicemail Finally Coming to Sony Ericsson

Visual voicemail is furthering its presence in the mobile phone world, as another handset maker now supports the functionality. Sony Ericsson users in the Norwegian area can access the improved feature with provider Netcom.

The technology was created by Wakefield, Massachusetts-based Comverse. Visual voicemail provides a graphical user interface (GUI) view at the messages saved in your voicemail account. So on one screen, you can see who has left you a message, how long each of your messages are, and how many saved messages you have.

It is still a limited service as only a few dozen handsets offer visual voicemail. However, it seems like a natural progression to mobile technology and will probably soon become a standard. As of now, carriers are charging users a monthly fee to have access to the convenient feature.

Comverse is the same company that launched visual voicemail on the iPhone. Said company manager Thorbjorn Rusnes, "Our launch last year of Comverse Visual Voicemail for the iPhone was extremely well received by our iPhone subscribers. The service is in such high demand that we were eager to extend availability to owners of other popular handsets. We are proud to inform our many Sony Ericsson users that they can now be the first in the world to enjoy visual voicemail on their handsets."
