Classrooms are going digital next year by turning student’s desks into touch screen surfaces. The experts at Durham University designed these desks and Lumin Visual Technology AG is manufacturing them for classrooms. The desks use a 4500 ANSI lumens projector to display the images onto the 42 inch screen. An infra-red camera inside the desk records where the screen is being touched and relates that information to the Multitouch Input Management Software, developed by Lumin. The desks are part of a project, Synergnet, in England, that integrates technology into the classrooms. The project received 1.5 million GBP in funding to order these desks. The desks are also designed to encourage more student participation. The interactive desks are also able to accept up to 32 different sense points. That means that three students can use all ten fingers on one screen simultaneously.
