In the epic quest to determine what is always the best Gizmodo has recently had a battlemodo to see what projector is the best 1080p model for under $1000. The two candidates include the Vivitek H1080FD and the Optoma HD20. Both models feature full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, but the H1080FD also features 1800 ANSI lumens and a 5000:1 contrast ratio, while the HD20 features 1700 ANSI lumens and a 4000:1 contrast ratio. Gizmodo tested both projectors in a variety of fields including brightness, color, contrast, noise, user interface, inputs, and many more. Because both projectors are considered budget projectors, the writers didnt have high hopes for either machine, but after the tests were over they were pleasantly surprised. Out of the 12 different fields the winner was clearly the Vivitek H1080FD projector, taking 1st place in all categories except for the replacement lamp cost. The HD20 did tie with the H1080FD for first in several categories like picture clarity, user interface, placement flexibility, and lamp life, but that wasnt enough for it to win the dual. And even though the HD20 did loose the competition, the writers did note that it in its own right is an excellent HD projector.
