Do Bundroids Dream Of Electric Carrots?

Do Bundroids Dream Of Electric Carrots?

Well, do they? It’s something to seriously ponder. Also ponderable: what’s an electric carrot, and would this bot know how to grow one? For some reason, I’m not sure I want to know what’s going to come out of that egg.

iRobot takes up the ChemBot challenge, no one is safe

iRobot takes up the ChemBot challenge, no one is safe

Hide your kids, iRobot just got that ChemBot contract DARPA was shopping around last year, which means that before we know it, sentient bots will be oozing through keyholes and making really bad movies without regard for human life or decency.

BotJunkie @ RoboGames 2008

I don’t know about you, but here at BotJunkie, this past weekend was all about RoboGames. Okay, and maybe one or two other things. But still… If for some reason you couldn’t make it to San Francisco, you totally missed out on the 504 (!) robots competing in 58 different events.

Pomi robot penguin shows its emotions with smells

Pomi robot penguin shows its emotions with smells

We've seen plenty of robots that attempt to display emotions, but none quite like this Pomi penguin bot developed by Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, which can emit two unspecified smells in addition to employing some more common means of letting you know how it feels.

CMU Nanobots Large Enough To Be Seen

Most of the time, it’s a bit frustrating to write about nanobots. We have to talk about them in the context of teeny tiny little scales that you can’t really identify with… 250 microns long? What does that even MEAN? CMU’s nanobots are barely, just barely, large enough to identify with.

Waalbot, the wall-climbing, gecko-footed robot

Waalbot, the wall-climbing, gecko-footed robot

Robots do all sorts of things, but climbing walls seems to be a goal engineers can't live without. Meet the Waalbot which is fitted with gecko-like micro fiber feet that can sick to vertical and even ceiling surfaces.

Sega's E.M.A. robot walks like a lady, offers up smooches

There's something that makes us a bit uncomfortable about a robot that sports a "glamorous body," walks like a lady, and offers up some serious snogging.

Intel shows off robotic hand with "Pre Touch" object conformation

Intel shows off robotic hand with "Pre Touch" object conformation

Robotics have come a long way, but they still often miss that innate, nervous sense of reluctant touch. Intel researchers have achieved something similar with a robotic hand that uses electrolocation to create a robotic hand conform to the shape of an object before interacting with it.
