    Preview

    • The cover of the AC Circuits Workbook: 100 graded problems with full worked solutions, a series R-L-C circuit, and the 230 V 50 Hz and 120 V 60 Hz supplies
    • The contents page listing the eleven chapters with the pages of their problems and solutions
    • The first page of chapter 1, sine waves, RMS and phase: each problem has its figure, a supply tag and a level marker
    • A problem page from the AC power chapter: two room air conditioners, one on 230 V 50 Hz and one on 120 V 60 Hz
    • A page of worked solutions: numbered steps for each problem, with the page its problem is on

The cover, then four pages of the A4 version. The page previews carry a "Preview" watermark. The PDFs you download have none, and the figures are vector drawings that stay sharp at any zoom.

    • AC conventions and a 2-page formula sheet

RMS phasors, var, polar form, and every formula the problems need.

    Who it is for

Students in class 12 physics (AC chapter), diploma and polytechnic electrical or electronics courses, ITI electrician and electronics mechanic trades, and first-year engineering basic electrical courses in India. It also suits US and Canadian students in community-college and first-year AC circuits courses, and hobbyists and technicians who want to work out mains and audio circuits on paper. It assumes the DC basics: Ohm’s law, series and parallel, and KVL and KCL. The DC Circuits Workbook covers those.

Everything in the pack is also free on the site, spread across these pages. The pack puts it on paper in one place:

    • RC time constant calculator
    • Capacitor code calculator

    Tips and tricks

    • Convert every quantity to ohms, volts and hertz before you start. A capacitor in microfarads put into the reactance formula as farads is a common slip.
    • Sketch the phasor diagram first, even a rough one. It tells you whether the current should lead or lag, so a wrong sign shows up at once.
    • Check the supply tag on the problem. The same circuit gives different numbers on 230 V 50 Hz and 120 V 60 Hz, and 25 problems are worked on both.
    • Keep full precision until the last line. When your answer differs from the book in the final digit, look at your rounding before your method.

    What we would do

Do the phasor chapters in order, because power factor, resonance and the filters all lean on them. The ideas are explained free in our AC Circuits, Energy Storage, Magnetism and Transformers, and DC Circuits lessons; the book puts them on paper in one place, with the problems and the full working.

    Questions

    What level is it?
It starts with reading the mains voltage off a sine wave and ends with three-phase faults and antenna matching. Each problem is marked warm-up, core, stretch or challenge, and 20 are tagged exam-style. Level counts: 26 warm-up, 40 core, 28 stretch, 6 challenge.
    India or US supplies?
Both, with equal weight. 25 problems are worked on both 230 V 50 Hz and 120 V 60 Hz, 8 are India/IEC only, 8 are North America only, and the rest do not depend on the supply.
    Are the answers right?
Yes. We re-solved every problem independently from its given values and checked every printed answer, and the key numbers in the working, at the digits shown. All 91 circuit problems were also solved in the ngspice circuit simulator, and all 406 printed numbers the simulations could check agreed. If you find a slip, write to [email protected] and it goes into the next edition.
Does it cover Laplace transforms, two-port networks or second-order transients?
No. It sticks to steady-state AC with phasors and first-order RC and RL switching, which is what most first AC courses examine.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It is an ordinary PDF, and the figures are vector drawings that stay sharp when you zoom in. A tablet or a printout is easier to work from than a phone.
    A4 or Letter?
You get both, in one ZIP, with identical text and page numbers.
Can a teacher use it with a class?
The PDF is for one person’s study. For a classroom, coaching centre or ITI batch, write to [email protected].
